History
Hyperbaric chambers have been used clinically since the mid 1880’s. Their existence actually dates back to 1662. In the 1930’s hyperbaric chambers were safely being used to treat decompression sickness, known as “the bends”. Over the last 40 years, HBOT has gained recognition in the medical community as an important tool in aiding and healing many medical conditions.
Conditions
Hyperbarics is approved by the FDA to treat the following conditions:
Gas embolism, carbon monoxide poisoning, gas gangrene, crush injury, diabetic foot ulcers, decompression sickness, necrotizing soft tissue, osteomyelitis, radiation tissue damage, severe anemia, failed skin grafts and flaps, and thermal burns.

What is mHBOT?
Mild hyperbaric oxygen treatment (mHBOT) refers to treating a patient in an enclosed chamber at pressures below 1.5 atmospheric pressure (ATA). 1.3 ATA is equivalent to 4 PSI or around 11 feet below sea level.
When under the pressure of 1.3 ATA the patient breathes clean, filtered ambient air (the same air we breathe everyday, except all the dust and chemicals are filtered out).
Hyperbaria is based Henry's law of physics comma which states that more gas is dissolved in a liquid by increasing the pressure of the gas. the pressure actually pushes the oxygen (or air) into all of the fluids of the body including: plasma, lymph, synovial (joint) fluid, and cerebrospinal fluid (surrounding the brain and spinal cord), thus increasing your oxygen levels, Which in return decreases swelling and inflammation. The added oxygen also causes our cells to function more efficiently and accelerates healing. Some studies show pressures of 1.5 ATA or lower are more beneficial in correcting immune imbalances, and that higher pressures can negatively affect the immune system.

Hyperbaric Used To Treat Stroke Worldwide
Stroke is caused by a sudden loss of blood and oxygen to a specific area of the brain, which also then swell in a repeated cycle. It is estimated that more than 200 single patient chambers and over two dozen multi-place chambers are presently active in the United States. Nevertheless, the majority of patients suffering from syndromes which respond well to HBOT therapy are treated in hospitals devoid of such devices.
Due to dramatic results seen with many persons suffering with a stroke, hyperbaric therapy is widely growing. Physicians from all over our country are scrambling to offer this therapy to patients with stroke, as well as a variety of conditions.

Daniel Rossignol, Medical Doctor and Hyperbaric Specialist equated an hour treatment in a personal hyperbaric chamber to taking 40 Motrin, without the toxic response. “You get increased oxygenation, decreased swelling, and decreased inflammation, all from one treatment”, Dr. Rossignol commented, “If a drug did this, a pharmaceutical company would make quite a bit of money.”
Utilizing Hyperbaric Therapy For Multiple Sclerosis
Extensive international medical research, over the past twenty years, has demonstrated that hyperbaric therapy will be considered an integral role in the treatment of Multiple Sclerosis. In many parts of the world, hyperbaric therapy is considered a key component of an effective MS treatment program. In Europe, hyperbaric therapy is covered by insurance and is the main treatment for MS.
More and more medical researchers have come to regard hyperbaric therapy as a potent therapy for the successful treatment of multiple sclerosis without the side effects associated with many pharmaceuticals. hyperbarics has been shown to reduce pain significantly, modulate the immune system, increase energy, alleviate sleep dysfunction, and reduce cognitive impairment. In most cases, patients are also able to discontinue use of many of their drug prescriptions.
Hyperbaric therapy raises oxygen levels in the body through the increased pressure in the hyperbaric chamber. Viruses are unable to survive in the presence of abundant oxygen, therefore a significant ‘die-off’ of viruses and bacteria is experienced when undergoing hyperbaric treatments. Hyperbaric therapy also acts as an immune modulator and allows organ and gland functionality to normalize, reducing many debilitating MS symptoms.
A recent study by the New England Journal of Medicine cited evidence of forty chronic Multiple Sclerosis patients, in advanced stages of the disease, were treated with hyperbaric therapy at 2 ATA for 90 minute sessions. Seventy percent of those treated received relief from the effects of MS after the twenty study treatments.

Clinical Study: Mild Hyperbarics for Impaired Brain Function
A study performed by Dr. Gunnar Heuser, MD, PhD, Toxic Exposure Specialist, revealed that just ten treatments with mild hyperbaric therapy resulted in enhanced short term memory and balance, as well as a decrease in headaches for those with diminished brain function.
The study was comprised of patients who suffered from brain function impairment due to chemical, pesticide and other toxic exposures. Patient symptoms prior to treatment included deficient cerebral function such as memory loss, inability to balance as well as attention deficit disorder.
The treatment consisted of ten sessions in a hyperbaric chamber at 1.3 ATA, for one hour per day, five consecutive days for two weeks. To increase the validity to the study results, SPECT scans of each patient’s brain were taken before and after the hyperbaric treatments.

The SPECT scan showed an increase to blood flow and oxygen to the temporal lobe, which is the area of the brain which controls short term memory. SPECT scans of patients taken before hyperbaric treatments showed a significant amount of dormant activity while scans taken of patients’ brains after hyperbaric treatments indicated an increase in brain activity and blood flow. Dormant brain regions were replaced with greater functioning tissues and represented a scan more similar to a healthy individual.

Oxygen Absorption of a Cell Under Pressure
Chart is taken from the Townsend Newsletter focusing on MS Volume 2 Issue 2.
Understanding how hyperbaric works is important to making an intelligent decision. One basic fact is that more of a good thing doesn’t mean more is better, in other words, more can actually be destructive.
When a body is placed in a chamber as pressure is increased, oxygen is dissolved into all of the body fluids, plasma, lymph, brain. |
Every living cell has a range of function related to pressure. Looking at the chart above, you will note that as pressure gets to 4 lbs./sq. inch slightly above, the cell then starts to reject and resist the uptake of oxygen. By the time you get to 1.5 ATA, the decline is well on the way. As you increase the pressure to 1.75 ATA, the problem gets worse.
The next problem is oxygen. Pure oxygen is toxic and actually damages the Alveolar Sacs in the lungs. There is lots of information available on this subject.
We have been treating successfully for over 7 years. We have never had a bad reaction or seizure. There is no risk of fire or explosion when not using oxygen.

Pro Athletes and Hyperbarics
Mild hyperbaric therapy has been a growing trend with professional athletes over the last few years. By providing oxygen at a cellular level, athletes heal rapidly from sport injuries, they have a faster recovery from their intense workouts, their energy levels are high, they have better concentration and clarity in their mind, and thus they can perform at their peak.
Many professional athletes purchase their own hyperbaric chamber for personal use. Many have reported that they have less lactic acid build up, more endurance, and less muscle fatigue.
Here are a few professional athletes that own a chamber for personal use:

Stroke
I suffered a massive stroke after receiving chemotherapy for colon cancer. I was paralyzed completely on the whole right side of my body and thought that I would never walk, talk, write, or eat the way I had previously ever again.
I received physical and occupational therapy at the hospital and continued on at home basis for quite some time, which did help, but I needed that extra push to really get the results that I needed to make me whole again.
I came from Illinois, driving across country, thanks to my great wife, in snowstorms, just to get treatment from Midwest Mild Hyperbarics, as I could not afford $2,000 per session it cost in Illinois for similar treatment.
You made it possible and economical for me to receive the treatment I needed to get the extra movement and flexibility in my right foot, hand and my voice came back to almost normal. I can write better and I can even cuddle with my wife, which I hadn't been able to do in over a year. The cost enabled me to receive over 20 treatment for the cost of 1 in Illinois.
I feel that my results would have been better had I started sooner rather that 1 1/2 years after the stroke, but I am still impressed with the results and would highly recommend hyperbarics and specifically Midwest Mild Hyperbarics to anyone who has suffered a stroke.
Sincerely,
Vernon C. Johnson

Non Healing Wound
Lester Schuldt had a non-healing wound on his leg for a couple of years. The only option was he was given by medical doctors was to amputate his leg. After coming to Midwest Mild Hyperbarics and participating in a series of mild hyperbaric treatments, the wound healed up (completely) in a matter of two months although improvement was evident after only a few treatments...

MS
I was diagnosed with MS on August of 1995. I have had five relapses with the most recent being this February and it was the worse relapse I have had in 12 years. I was sleeping about 16 hours a day and when I DID get out of bed, I found myself in a recliner after and hour or two. I couldn't read because my comprehension skills were so diminished. I couldn't watch TV because I couldn't concentrate. So... I sat in the chair and played and talked to God and asked Him to talk to me. I learned many things during that time about how I needed to adjust my life and behaviors that were causing me so much stress, however I just couldn't seem to come out of my relapse.
I went into the Hyperbaric chamber at Dr. Brodie's clinic. After 20 minutes or so, my eyes widened and I thought, "Hey I feel pretty good!" After the treatment, my
husband and I were driving down the road and I couldn't believe how well I felt, but I was hesitant to jump up and down because I was afraid it was temporary. So I went in the chamber the second and third day. And then I got my own chamber! I believe that going in the chamber brought me OUT of my relapse. Just like that. Boom. Also, I was taking Provigil and Prozac and I am totally OFF both those medications. Completely. I believe 100% in the chamber and it's benefits!

Stroke
This letter is to be given to DR. Brodie at Belle Fourche Hyperbaric (now known as Midwest Mild Hyperbarics) in reference to Diann Plamp.
Since my mother started doing hyperbaric therapy at Belle Fourche hyperbaric we have noticed considerable change in the following areas:
My mother experienced a stroke in September 2008 and has been limited in her speech as had severe aphasia... the stroke also left her completely paralyzed on her right side after 12 months of hospital therapy we decided to try some alternatives... we have seen great results with hyperbarics and will have her continue more treatments in the fall.
My father also used the hyperbaric chamber to help heal open sores that have been on his legs for years... this is the first time in 20 years that I have seen the sores completely healed up and normal skin tone returning to his legs.
Thanks to Dr. Brodie and staff, we really appreciate all that you have done!
Sincerely, Sherri D. Kayser
Daughter of Delmar and Diann Plamp.

Overall Wellness
My experience with hyperbaric Chambers treatment has come through my family members. My wife, daughter, mother, and father.
Our first experience was through my wife Joni. Her issues were related to a 1997 car accident in which she broke her neck. After her neck fusion and other needed surgeries, she had chronic neck, back, and joint pain. After her very first 1 hour treatment, she saw the most restful night sleep she has had in years. After four treatments she was noticing more energy, stamina, and dramatically reduced muscle and joint pain. Something she did not expect, was the dramatic effect on her digestive track. The constipation she had battles with her whole life id gone. This must have had an effect on her weight, because over the course of seven treatments, she has lost 9 pounds and is keeping it off. She is thrilled with the results and has never had more energy or felt better.
Next, I took my dad, Albert, in to try and see if it would have an effect on his mid-stage Alzheimer's. It did!! The first day after his treatment we all noticed better color in his face and his cognitive abilities were much improved. He was less confused and able to follow instruction. Subsequent treatments have seen him improve. HB treatments have healed his digestive track as well.
My mother, Mae, was scheduled for shoulder surgery. She was to undergo a complete shoulder replacement. Before her surgery she underwent three treatments. With a built up level oxygen in her blood and tissues at the time of surgery, the doctors performing the surgery remarked at how healthy the tissue was and how amazingly the procedure went. She had no redness, no bruising, no swelling, and very little pain. The follow up nurses were shocked and amazed as she is recovering beautifully and plans to resume treatments to help speed the recovery.
Hailey, our teenage daughter, has begun treatments to help deal with acne problems she has struggled with for two years. She has only had two treatments has already seen a reduced redness and swelling. She plans to continue for several more treatments.
HB treatments have improved my families life! We have seen too many real changes to deny its benefits. We have recommended it to all of our friends and families and they have seen great results as well. The benefits of HB treatments are amazing for the old and the young.

I just wanted to give you an update on Dax.
He has been doing very well lately. I would say in the last 3 months he has really made some big jumps. He is talking A LOT more-- expressing some feelings, making attempts to play with other kids--using more and more imagination. He is HAPPY... There is still work to do--he is immature socially but I am happy that he is interested in other kids and is trying--It's a start. I have included a note that was sent to me from his teacher yesterday-- wa have been getting positive notes like this from them a lot in the last month. Here it is..
"By the way, Dax has been doing very well lately, even considering our move. He is writing his name and doing almost all worksheets independently, with just a little verbal guidance from an adult. He has been a good role model at circle time, because he knows more numbers by name than many of our other students. He is participating in PE activities, and is branching out beyond just puzzles at work time. We are very pleased with his progress!"

I credit his progress almost exclusively to his hyperbaric oxygen therapy ( I have done many things to try to help Dax since finding out he was on the spectrum at 2.5 years old and mHBOT is one of the 2 things that I believe actually made a significant change in his well being.) Having the opportunity to meet you and expose Dax to this treatment has been a miracle in my opinion. Is he cured or Recovered from it? No-- not yet--but the progress that has been made is undeniable and I have lots of renewed hope for his future. We took a few months off MMBOT because we have been so busy and are now ready to jump back in--I am excited to get going again. I will keep in touch.

Brain Injury
My son, Kaleb, was injured in an accident in 2002. He received severe brain injuries and was hospitalized for a year. He was doing ok but was not making much progress.
IN 2007 we found hyperbarics. After the first week the fog started to lift. He was more aware of what was going on around him and started to be more interactive with people. He was incontinent at night and that was resolved. He was attending a cognitive therapy school in Rapid City and started to make better progress there.
He did hyperbarics for a year and then we bought our own chamber so we could continue it at home as a maintenance therapy. He still continues to take slight gains. He will always have to be taken care of, but at least he is more involved with the works.

What does the future hold for personal hyperbaric therapy? With thousands of personal hyperbaric chambers in use, it is impossible to dismiss this surge as a mere fad. In fact, each year international studies keep confirming the health benefits of this holistic therapy. With all of the demands that we place on our bodies each day, it may be time to move the treadmill over and make room for a personal hyperbaric chamber.
(Interview with Dr. Dan A. Rossignol, Medical Veritas 3 (2006))
Why Didn’t My Doctor Tell Me About Hyperbaric Treatments?
Although hyperbaric therapy is used in hospitals throughout the U.S. and the world, hyperbaric is not typically covered by insurance for ‘off-label’ uses in the U.S., therefore most doctors are unable to recommend the therapy because of contract obligations with insurance companies.
Hyperbaric therapy is used to treat numerous conditions as an ‘off-label’ use, many of which are documented with scientific evidence that is stronger than that of the FDA approved conditions.
Nearly all medical clinics, doctor’s offices, and hospitals use FDA-approved drugs and medical devices for ‘off-label’ use on a consistent basis. Physicians will direct patients to hospitals with hyperbaric chambers for conditions, which are approved by the FDA for treatment.

“Battling toxicity and its ravaging effects on our bodies has become a critical health concern in our modern society.” stated Dr. Kyle Vandyke, Medical Advisor to the International Hyperbaric Association. “Our industrial progress presents itself as a double-edged sword. We may benefit greatly from our technological advancements, but we now are let to deal with the toxic side effects. Personal hyperbaric therapy has become a critical treatment for detoxing the body.”
